Birchbox – May

on May 21, 2013

My May Birchbox is here!
I have been seeing very mixed reviews this month.
I have to admit – I can see why.

May’s Theme: Beauty Diaries

Four samples and a pen.  Hmmmm….

DevaCurl 3-Step System
1 oz each No-Poo Cleanser – One Condition – Light Defining Gel
Retail $19 for 12 fl oz (each) – Sample Value $4.75

I am still doing my test drive for Aveda – so these will have to wait until next week.
I have been curious about this product line – so it’s cool I got it.
That said – foil packets just plain suck.

Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner in Suman (Black)
Retail $21 for 4 mini pencils / $11 for full size – Sample Value $5.25

When I first joined BB they sent me Eyeko in Navy and I was hooked.
I have brown eyes and it made them pop.

Black is fine – but I have five samples of black already – in better formulas.
This is too creamy and very smudgy.  Great if you are going for a goth look.
Since my goal is to wear my make up so I don’t scare my three-year old
or my hubby
this is NOT great.

Coola Classic Face SPF 30 Cucumber Moisturizer
Retail $32 for 1.7 fl oz – Sample Value $4.48 for .23 fl oz

Now this is cool!
Organic moisturizer with high SPF – and it smells lovely
(if you like the smell of cucumbers – which I do)

I usually use ThinkBaby SPF 50 under my make up during the summer.
This will be great for days I am not outside too much.

**Update**
This is a great moisturizer – light formula and the sunscreen worked great!

Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Blueberry
Retail $20 for 5 fl oz – Sample Value $2.93 for .75 fl oz

I haven’t tried this yet – but love the smell.
It gets decent reviews so I am hopeful!

**Update**
This is not that great.  Feels like shaving with hair conditioner mixed with oil.
Plus it had a weird way of wicking moisture – like getting anti-perspirent on your hands.

Pilot Acroball PureWhite Pen in Turquoise
Retail $6.24 for 4 – Sample Value $1.56

WTF?!

On one hand this is better than a piece of chocolate.
On the other – were they low on samples and decided to hit the
stationary/office aisle at Costco??

Total Value for my May Birchbox – $18.97

Between the foil packs and the pen I have to say this box felt weak.
Especially after Ipsy’s amazing May bag.

That mini eyeliner looks great! Overall though, not a very strong box.

I ended up really disliking the eyeliner, as well. Such a disappointment that you got the pen, too! Sorry! But your comment about Birchbox hitting up Costco is super funny and totally spot on… I saw another blogger call this month “pengate” and I thought that was hilarious. 😛 What was Birchbox thinking?!

    • Mizz Mo says:

I saw a comment that asked if the BB curators were digging in their purses for things to add to the box. It seems like every few months the box companies hit a sour note – guess this month is Birchbox’s turn.

I just found your blog today and it’s cool to see someone else’s BB! I was never sure if we all received the same box or if they differed slightly. The only thing I had last month that was the same as yours was the blueberry shaving cream, no pen for me but I love pens so I probably would have liked it. 🙂 I’m a huge fan of Deva products so I’m super jelly about those and the organic sunscreen!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! BB sends out about 20 to 30 different boxes each month. So the box you receive is based on how you answered the questions in your profile. Hope you enjoy your future boxes!!
